What Role Does Ethics Play in Sports?

To understand the role ethics plays in sport and competition, it is important to make a distinction between gamesmanship and sportsmanship. Some of the concept about What Role Does Ethics Play in Sports? are taken here (Click the link to view): http://www.scu.edu/ethics/publications/submitted/sports-ethics.html
Some of the key tenants of GAMESMANSHIP are:
  • • Winning is everything
  • • It's only cheating if you get caught
  • • It is the referee's job to catch wrongdoing, and the athletes and coaches have no
  • inherent responsibility to follow the rules
  • • The ends always justify the means
Example of Gamesmanship:

Final Result for the game: "Com Sci team cheated during the game". -Rumors and according to the Com Sci team and for those who watched the game, "CS players play fair, at the beginning and until the end of the game".
after posting/seeing this status, the student from  different course whom said that Com Sci cheated during the game deleted the post (status update) immediately and liked the said status posted by one of the student of Computer Science.

Sportsmanship
The goal in sportsmanship is not simply to win, but to pursue victory with honor by giving one's best effort. Ethics in sport requires four key virtues: fairness, integrity, responsibility, and respect.
Example of Sportsmanship:
  • • All athletes should show respect for teammates, opponents, coaches, and officials.
  • • All coaches should show respect for their players, opponents, and officials.
  • • All fans, especially parents, should show respect for other fans, as well as both teams and officials.

True sportsmanship is knowing that you need your opponent because without him or her, there is no game. Acknowledging that your opponent holds the same deep-rooted aspirations and expectations as you. Knowing that, win or lose, you will walk off the course with pride.  Always taking the high road. And always, always, always being a good sport.

"Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence wins championships."
